Every season comes with its own set of challenges when it comes to your car. Winter, however, presents more seasonal hassles than the rest. Between the dangerous driving conditions and the extreme temperatures, there’s a long list of things that can go wrong with your car. Many drivers will make a trip to their mechanic before the cold weather moves on. At Road Runner Auto Repair, we’re very familiar with many of the issues drivers face in the winter, no matter how well-prepared they are.
Here are some of the most common reasons to visit your mechanic in the winter.
New Battery
Extreme temperatures can affect the performance of your vehicle, especially extreme cold. If the temperature drops well below freezing, your car battery loses power much more quickly than in mild weather. In some cases, especially if you park your car outside overnight, you might have to replace the battery.
Coolant System
Although uncommon, it’s not impossible for coolant to freeze. The freezing point of engine coolant is -34º, which is pretty darn cold. It doesn’t often get that cold in New England, but it’s not unheard of. You should always check that the coolant you are using is meant for cold temperatures, rather than milder climates.
Heater and Defroster
You use your heater and defroster way more often in the winter than the rest of the year. So it should come as no surprise that repairs to car heaters and defrosters are more common in the winter. Even if the extra use is not what caused the need for repair, you’re more likely to notice it in the winter because it’s that much colder, and you need to use it more often.
Alternator Repair
Your alternator is what keeps your battery charged and powers all your electrical systems and accessories. When the weather gets cold, it can struggle to keep up. If it fails to keep the battery charged, you won’t be able to start your car, which is not a position you ever want to be in, especially not when it’s freezing outside.
